Paignton Zoo made the difficult decision after its last elephant Duchess died in 2019. It came following the death of her companion Gay – one of two elephants ever owned by the zoo - in 2010. The thirteen elephants weighing 25 tonnes in total will be flown more than 7,000 km (4,350 miles) across the globe to their ancestral sanctuary in Mwaluganje Elephant Sanctuary for rewilding. By Mmegi Online Tourism Minister Damas Ndumbaro said successful hunters would be allowed to kill aged elephants, lions and other big game considered unproductive.
